Last year, I was approached by Hayley Huntley and Lindsey Saysell of Glo-Active CIC to write a grant application for its Saturday Starz project to Children in Need.
Saturday Starz is a group for able-bodied and disabled children and young people where they can take part in a wide range of activities such as cookery, sports and fitness, arts and crafts, quizzes, outings and overnight residential trips. There are two age groups that run on alternate Saturdays: 5 – 11 and 12 – 18.
By providing the venue, resources and volunteers, Saturday Starz provides an opportunity for children and young people to take part in activities in that they would not otherwise be able to do, opening up opportunities and horizons. The sessions bring together a diverse range of children and young people and allow them to interact with each other, breaking down barriers and building social skills. They also give valuable respite for parents caring for children with disabilities and difficulties.
I worked with Hayley and Lindsey to develop a grant application to cover staffing and project support costs for a year. We submitted the application in November 2014. In January 2015 Hayley had a telephone interview with a Children in Need Assessor. And in March 2015 Glo-Active was awarded the full grant amount!
When Hayley got in touch to let me know, she said, “Thanks so much for your work on this, we couldn’t have done it without you!!!” I’m in awe of the work Hayley and Lindsey do and the level of dedication and commitment they show, so I was delighted to be able to work with them to help secure this grant.
